Problem after problem.
Today we have encountered another problem. As said before due to screening our short film to a groupof students the initial decision was to re-shoot the whole film due to many complications. However due to very little time this isn't possible to take place and therefore we have no option other than to make and do with what we already have. We are hoping that through the use of special effects and the insertion of non-diagetic sound. Fingers crossed we should be able to create a good end product nevertheless!
Re-filming scenes.
After a whole week of editing we screened our short film to some students within the college. Although they didn't raise many issues there was a concern about the amount of dialogue that was present through the film. Also many background noises overtook the characters while they were talking therefore the audience wasn't able to make sense of what was being said. We have now concluded to shoot most of our short film again which will take place over the next few days and edit it by the end of the week hopefully as it is vital at this point to have sufficient amount of footage. We have also decided to condense the film in order to save time as we are approaching the maximum time limit of the short film.

Editing week 2.
Today we edited a sufficient amount of our short film. We also came to the conclusion of having flashbacks at parts where there wasn't much dialogue of the characters. We experimented with a variety of effects as well as desaturation and cross stretch along with increasing speed and muting sounds within the scenes. Tomorrow we hope to continue with editing.

Editing problems.
We are now approaching the second week of editing however have encountered some problems. Through some of the scenes there is an overlap of sound from the surrounding areas of the park which means we are unable to hear what the characters are communicating. We are now unsure if we should film these scenes again as we will lose continuity or if we should use a VoiceOver. Tomorrow hopefully we will decide what needs to be done as the editing deadline is approaching swiftly and filming at this point is not ideal.

Filming the short film.
Today me and my group member together with our 4 actors filmed all the scenes of our short film. Having delayed this a week due to the actors being unavailable today all scenes of our short film have been completed. Whilst filming, the actors suggested ways in which we could alter the scenes of our storyboard to make it seem much more realistic with a clear storyline, therefore we have changed some scenes as well as locations and this will be shown in our film. Moreover as the script was quite brief our actors were happy to improvise as much as they could. During the course of the next 2 weeks we hope to start editing as well as finishing this before the deadline. Over all we all had a great day filming and are looking forward to the finished product!

This is another
close-up of the location in which the scene where the murderer will be looking
around to find the victim – Kevin will take place. We hope to build up the
tension at this point as it is the main point which the whole short film is
anticipating and therefore the camera shots will be various such as longshot
once he arrives, mid-shot when he slowly pulls the knife out, close-up when he
is looking for Alisha and Kevin and finally an extreme close-up when he finds
them. We need to watch out for any potential hazards such as small children
running around and other obstacles such as members of the public who wish not
to be filmed however apart from this there are not many health and safety
implications we are liable to face.
Within the park this is the particular area in which we will
be filming the scenes where Alisha and Kevin meet. At first Kevin will be alone
and the filming will reflect his emotions as he will be feeling ecstatic to
meet Alisha assuming the feeling is mutual however once she arrives and they
get talking he will become more relaxed. At this point he will be using his
phone to text Alisha and we will show his emotions while this is happening
through close-ups and mid-shots. Once Alisha is at the scene there will be many
shot reverse shots as both characters are speaking. Finally Kevin will assume
Alisha is interested in him as much as he is and will attempt to place a kiss
on her lips and what he doesn’t know is while they were talking Alisha is
texting her boyfriend letting him know of their where about. At this point we
will show a close-up of her texting and then the various scenes of her
boyfriend on his way to the park will take place in a separate location. Using
a bench area establishes the relaxation and intimacy Kevin feels towards Alisha
as they both will be alone and having the murder take place while this is
happening will show how Kevin was unquestionably unaware of the likelihood of
such events taking place. This contributes to showing the “honey trap killing”
and how secretive it is. After the murder the scene will end straight at that
point, ending the film.
The scenes of Alisha being intimidated by other students are
also a major part of the short film. As the scene will be repeated in the form
of continuous flashbacks it is important that we are able to film this
correctly and accurately. At this point Alisha will be seen leaving college
however when approached by two members of the college whom she has straining
relationships with things take a turn for the worse when she is unable to
handle the pressure leading to her resulting to the extreme lengths of a honey
trap killing. Using this environment adds to the realism of the film as such
events do actually take place within the environment of peers and can lead to
devastating effects on the individual if not tackled. You can then agree that
the film promotes two aspects of the events which take place in today’s society
both of which need to be tackled. One being bullying and the idea that this
needs to stop and the second being not to result to the lengths of the honey
trap killing as well as raising awareness of what goes on between different
social groups and the role technology plays towards this. Again the issue of
making sure we are not filming anyone if they are not willing to will arise in
the filming of this scene other than that filming should go according to plan.
A bus stop of the similar looks to this will be used to film the scenes
once Alisha has left her boyfriend when he is unable to understand the pressure
and trouble she is facing through her daily college life and how much this is
having an impact on her mentally and emotionally. The actress will be sitting
down with her phone and this is also the scene at which point Kevin calls
Alisha and the camera shots will reflect her emotions when he calls such as the
close-up to the phone.

Camera tutorial.
Today after completing pre-production we learnt how to operate the functions on cameras which we will be using to film. Within this we learnt particularly how to use selective focus and blur. The function of this was the 'focus' icon and we experimented with a short exercise of focussing the camera on two different objects/people which were in the same background. Learning to do this was essential due to the fact that if we wanted to shoot a scene which highlighted one characters emotions over another this camera setting would be what we would need to use, had we want to create this effect when editing it wouldn't happen and the continuity of the film wouldn't be accurate. Over the next few weeks we hope to film all our scenes for the short film!

Editing - tutorial Day 2.
Today we carried on editing and finishing our clip, once this was done we then moved on to adding special effects such as transitions, sound enhancements and adding subtitles/text. This was quite a challenging aspect as getting the right special effects in the correct place is very important, failing to do so can lead to a loss of flow and continuity of the short film. Once we had done this we then moved back to our pre-production. Within this we checked what had been done and what needs to be done before Mondays deadline. As well as this we also needed a few characters for the roles in the film, to assist us in doing so we visited the colleges drama theatre where we proposed our idea of the narrative storyline of the short film and then saw who was willing to volunteer. The outcome of this was successful and if all goes to plan we hope to audition the selected candidates and direct them to the role specification they will suit the most.

Editing tutorial - Day 1.
Today we had a lesson focussing on the editing area of our short film. The reason behind this being that as soon as we finish filming as a group we can move on to editing straight away. Within the lesson we learnt how to use Final Cut Pro and the basics of editing. This includes being able to cut and use various aspects of generic clips and forming a short sequence. We as a group found this challenging to approach however once we got the hang of it, everything was fine. Tomorrow we hope to move on to our second tutorial in which we'll learn how to successfully add special effects to the short film.

Pre production.
Today we went through all our pre-production documents and arranged and allocated individual tasks which would need to be completed by the deadline of 15th October. We also proposed an audition specification which detailed what we are looking for in our characters and the qualities they would need to possess in order to be considered for a role in our short film. This then is going to be given to the students of performing arts within the college and then we can hopefully generate some potential characters. As well as this I personally have found a character who will play the role of the lead male. over the next few days we have also been allocated a editing time slot in which we will learn to use Final Cut Pro - the editing software for our short film. We aim to get hands on full experience on how to operate the software so when it comes to editing this can be done with relative ease.

audience feedback on treatment.
After performing the pitch with our proposed treatment to the audience we gained some vital constructive feedback. There was a few mainpositive points as well as negative, some things we needed to re-think and change. The following is the conclusion we have drawn from the feedback.
Positivepoints:
- · The first positive point which we discovered was the fact that our short film idea is based on reality events. Many of the audience found this appealing and interesting to view as it creates a huge deal of awareness of the issue as well as how it can be prevented and tackled.This to us was a relief as it is the effect we initially intended and hoped to create.
- · The second good point was the overall idea and concept of the film. The audience found the idea, concepts, themes and everything else appealing and quite unique to other films.
Constructive points:
- · The initial reason for the female character leading on to the "honey trap killing" was due to college stress; however the audience found this as a weak aspect as it did not quite explain or define even the reason to why she would result to such an idea.
- · The length was also an issue raised; will we be able to explain all the proposed events in the time frame of 5-6minutes?
- · we also was approached by the fact that how exactly will we make it different compared to our inspiration of the similar film my murder and how exactly does it make us "unique".
- The last issue was a location based one. Part of our filming was planned to be carried out on a bus although this was effective idea the issue regarding permission was raised and whether it would be granted. Particularly due to the fact that many bus drivers when approached by teenagers often are reluctant to give them time and at the same time discuss the issue as it can waste valuable time as well as distract them from their job. therefore this needed to be changed.

pre-production, short film ideas.
Today we decided on a concept for our short film. this included looking at various short thrillers and deciding on theme, the predominant idea we agreed on was basing our short film on an existing real life documentary as we have already seen many films based on true stories and that show the actual reality of the world we live in we believe this was an effecitve concept to use. we mostly found that such types of films were successful in achieveing their aims as well as generating a huge amount of audience. the base of our film will be around teenagers and the basic story line will be about a conspiracy between a young teenage female and male who are together in harming another male character. the details of this and all other aspects related to our short film will follow soon as well as a proposed treatment and pitch.

Narrative: the narrative structure of this film involves that of a
linear narrative as the film starts of normally, a problem arises (the box) and
then it ends with the problem being overcome and the family finally living happily
ever after.

The characters are
presented as being a normal homely family, however with problems between the
parents as do all families at one point have. The children are presented as
respectful young girls, specifically adhering to the term ‘daddy’s girl’, they
all just happen to come towards such a problem which they believe is destroying
their child.

The film itself
consists of all types of camera shots ranging from long angle shots to extreme
close ups and many mid-shots. Moreover the film is mostly conversation and
action based so a great deal of shot reverse shot has been used. Special
effects have also been used quite a large amount, this is to obviously connote
the horror aspect of the film for example things flying across the room,
someone entering the little girls mouth etc.

The location of the
film is based in America with most of the scenes filmed at the family home,
although there are times when the little girls are attending school and the
times when the family has to visit the doctors due to the girls condition as
well as the scene where the father is seen to be visiting a specific place to
get information on the treasured box purchased at the boot sale, props include
everyday items such as a phone, home ware clothing etc and the lighting is
mainly daylight although some scenes contain an element of artificial lighting.

The film contains
non-diagetic sound as well as diagetic such as the music being used and the
conversation between the characters.

The target audience
of this specific film is teenagers of the age of 16 and over as stated by the
film producers who have set the film.

The potential ideas
we can take from this film include the various special effects that have been
used, these help to connote the story of the film as well as add effect which
is directed at the audience. For example the various special effects used when
there are things flying across the room as the audience make you leap from your
seat slightly and this intrigues the audience more as they would like to know
what happens further as well as being slightly terrified which is what films
like the possession intend to do as they are of the horror genre. Also this
specific scene in which we see the little girl getting slapped from what
appears to be her dad but in actual fact is the demon, the tension that builds
up to the point in which she does get slapped is effective in the sense that it
makes the audience think what is going to happen, and then of course we are
shown a relief of this tension and suspense through the slap. I believe this is
a very strong technique as it makes the audience terrified of what has just
happened and how/why it has happened. We can then implement this into our own
short film as it is an easy to connote and effective concept.
My murder:
Synopsis: A chance meeting with a girl leads to murder as a teenage boy
is engulfed by a web of lies in this innovative and gripping factual drama. My
Murder tells the true story of Shakilus Townsend, a 16-year-old boy who was led
to his death by the 15-year-old he thought of as his girlfriend, in what became
known as the honey trap killing.
· The film itself is shot in live action and is of a linear
narrative in which the ending is of the young boy losing his life due to his
own girlfriend.
· The characters within the film are represented as deviant
teenagers. Shakilul himself has just been released from prison from which the
audience can insinuate that he isn’t exactly a law abiding citizen.
· The girl is portrayed as an individual who isn’t exactly worried
about school and
views it as pointless, this conclusion can be drawn from the
girls attitude as well as her interest
in actions other than paying attention to her education. All other characters
are represented with the traditional stereotypes of teenagers i.e. hanging on
streets, causing trouble, engaging in criminal activities. This helps the
producers of the film show accurately what does happen in some parts of the
world and the fact that this was based on a true reality situation helps them.
· Within the film there are many camera shots used particularly a
variety of close ups as the characters are often seen alone with their mobile
phones at which there are various shots focused on them. This helps the viewers
make out just what is going on and puts them in the place of the character
allowing them to experience the different emotions they are feeling. The film
has been edited to show flow and continuation this helps the audience as it
follows the story, not only this but editing plays a huge part in the
production of the film and determines whether the message/narrative of the film
is communicated effectively.
· Filming is carried out in daylight with little use of artificial
light; again this is necessary as having a film based on a factual account
means that the reality of it needs to be as specific and accurate as possible.
Costume of the characters is relatively casual everyday wear; however when it
comes to portraying certain characters as adhering to stereotypes many of them
are shown as wearing garments of the correct stereotypical character. Make-up
has not been used at all as it is based on a real life scenario and based on
the story make-up would highly unlikely be the characters priority.

Sound within the film is of a mix of diagetic and non diagetic
for example the voiceover which we can instantly hear at the beginning is
something which has manually been put on top of the music in the background,
both are non diagetic; however the conversations between the characters and the
noise from the surroundings are all diagetic sounds. The music predominantly
adds to the overall effect of the film and at certain points being in the
position of the audience makes us feel sympathetic towards the character being
harmed. This again is an effective tool in communicating the message of the
film.

The target audience, due to the themes and narrative of the film
are those aged 16 and over. This is drawn from the fact that the film contains
sensitive scenes as well as concepts which will not be understood of anyone
below this age. Also because of the fact that this is based on a true story
many users watching may feel disturbed so therefore it is necessary for the
producers to set an age rate.

There are many ideas from this film which we wish to illustrate
in our own. To start with the storyline of the film is the main one that has
attracted us as being teenagers it is something we can relate to, having a
short film based on this concept would allow us to show the reality of such crimes
and being of the same age would benefit us as we nearly every day are in
contact with people of the likes of the characters within the film. Secondly
the music has been utilised to its full potential when it comes to having an
effect on the audience. It is essential as producers to be able to achieve the
aim of what has been set and this was to aware every one of such conspiracies
that take place, the music has alleviated in achieving this. In co-operating
the music use into our own film would help us achieve the message and would
generate sympathy from the audience leading to a rise in awareness of the
issue. Moving on to the particular aspect of the scene of the case study, the
most important factor which attracted me was the sound and the effect this had
at the end. After the killers had taken their toll the police sirens and an
emergency call are being played in the back. This makes the whole scene stand
out and generates a great deal of audience sympathy as the person who has just
been stabbed needs help however there is no assistance available. Showing the
reality of the struggle and pain the character is going through also makes this
effective as it demonstrates accurately just how bad such incidents are and the
effect this has on individuals.

The narrative of the film is non linear as there appears to be
no set story line although you can argue that there is a sense of a linear
structure as the teenagers are no longer alive at the end. The film is shot in
live action with some animation of the killer who is not human.

The themes of this film include loss of innocence of the
teenagers and American suburbs which basically relates to the fact that the
parents are moving to a better place for the safety of their children but in
actual fact what they are not aware of is the reality of area they are moving
to and the disastrous effects this would bring. The characters are presented as
normal teenagers minding their own business living with their families happily
until this problem arises.

Many camera shots have been used in this film; these vary from
extreme close-ups to midshots to wide angle shots, over the shoulder shots and
countless other types. At the points these are used they add to the effect of
the scene for example when the killer is moving towards the target, the close
ups and transitions to other shots make this attention-grabbing for the viewers.
The editing techniques within the film also contribute towards this as having
to fake the illusion of blood to make it seem as realistic as possible with all
the effects and noises is a whole major part of the film and if not done
correctly can lose the attention of the audience.

There is a mix of lighting within the film, artificial lighting
as well as natural light has been used and both of them contribute to the
overall effectiveness of the film. Having dark low it scenes within a horror
film help to create and build up the ambience of the whole story as well as
capture the attention of the viewers. Scenes have been filmed in a combination
of outdoor and within the home. Props such as knifes etc have also been used
which help the characters. The costumes connote the personalities of the
characters, for example the young girls are seen to be wearing white which
symbolises their innocence whilst the killer is wearing black which shows the
opposite and the fact that he isn’t so innocent which is then demonstrated by
his actions. Make-up has played a huge part in this film as it is vital to show

that the killer was one of the teenager’s friends was another alarming fact;
this was unknown to them and was concealed by the friend so well that they were
not even close to suspecting it was one of their own. The ideas I hope to
invest from this particular clip include the fact that the suspense caused at
the point at which the killers hand is shown, moreover the sound at this point
added to the whole effectiveness of the scene and I believe this is a strong
method of retaining as well as petrifying the audience. Furthermore hope to invest the overall
narrative of the film into my own short film and create the relationship with
the audience which will enable me to play with their minds and startle them
once they are aware of who was actually behind the events of the film the whole
time.

· The girl is portrayed as an individual who isn’t exactly worried about school and
views it as pointless, this conclusion can be drawn from the girls attitude as well as her interest in actions other than paying attention to her education. All other characters are represented with the traditional stereotypes of teenagers i.e. hanging on streets, causing trouble, engaging in criminal activities. This helps the producers of the film show accurately what does happen in some parts of the world and the fact that this was based on a true reality situation helps them.
· Within the film there are many camera shots used particularly a variety of close ups as the characters are often seen alone with their mobile phones at which there are various shots focused on them. This helps the viewers make out just what is going on and puts them in the place of the character allowing them to experience the different emotions they are feeling. The film has been edited to show flow and continuation this helps the audience as it follows the story, not only this but editing plays a huge part in the production of the film and determines whether the message/narrative of the film is communicated effectively.
· Filming is carried out in daylight with little use of artificial light; again this is necessary as having a film based on a factual account means that the reality of it needs to be as specific and accurate as possible. Costume of the characters is relatively casual everyday wear; however when it comes to portraying certain characters as adhering to stereotypes many of them are shown as wearing garments of the correct stereotypical character. Make-up has not been used at all as it is based on a real life scenario and based on the story make-up would highly unlikely be the characters priority.
· Sound within the film is of a mix of diagetic and non diagetic for example the voiceover which we can instantly hear at the beginning is something which has manually been put on top of the music in the background, both are non diagetic; however the conversations between the characters and the noise from the surroundings are all diagetic sounds. The music predominantly adds to the overall effect of the film and at certain points being in the position of the audience makes us feel sympathetic towards the character being harmed. This again is an effective tool in communicating the message of the film.
· The target audience, due to the themes and narrative of the film are those aged 16 and over. This is drawn from the fact that the film contains sensitive scenes as well as concepts which will not be understood of anyone below this age. Also because of the fact that this is based on a true story many users watching may feel disturbed so therefore it is necessary for the producers to set an age rate.
· There are many ideas from this film which we wish to illustrate in our own. To start with the storyline of the film is the main one that has attracted us as being teenagers it is something we can relate to, having a short film based on this concept would allow us to show the reality of such crimes and being of the same age would benefit us as we nearly every day are in contact with people of the likes of the characters within the film. Secondly the music has been utilised to its full potential when it comes to having an effect on the audience. It is essential as producers to be able to achieve the aim of what has been set and this was to aware every one of such conspiracies that take place, the music has alleviated in achieving this. In co-operating the music use into our own film would help us achieve the message and would generate sympathy from the audience leading to a rise in awareness of the issue. Moving on to the particular aspect of the scene of the case study, the most important factor which attracted me was the sound and the effect this had at the end. After the killers had taken their toll the police sirens and an emergency call are being played in the back. This makes the whole scene stand out and generates a great deal of audience sympathy as the person who has just been stabbed needs help however there is no assistance available. Showing the reality of the struggle and pain the character is going through also makes this effective as it demonstrates accurately just how bad such incidents are and the effect this has on individuals.

The narrative of the film is non linear as there appears to be
no set story line although you can argue that there is a sense of a linear
structure as the teenagers are no longer alive at the end. The film is shot in
live action with some animation of the killer who is not human.

teenagers and American suburbs which basically relates to the fact that the
parents are moving to a better place for the safety of their children but in
actual fact what they are not aware of is the reality of area they are moving
to and the disastrous effects this would bring. The characters are presented as
normal teenagers minding their own business living with their families happily
until this problem arises.
